Program #1: Early Fall 2020 Program for 7-12 yrs

(Read about our health and safety precautions.)

This program will be taught in a combination of Dutch and English.

During this early afternoon bootcamp on Sunday afternoons at the Amsterdam Public Library, kids ages 7-12 will learn important computer science and programming concepts while becoming familiar with collaborative design and computer programming.

Each class will be structured as a mini-hackathon with a surprise topic. NewTechKids’ teacher will outline a real-world problem before encouraging kids work in small teams to come up with their own ideas for robots and tech prototypes which solve it. Each class will end with team presentations during which kids explain their ideas, prototypes, and learning process.

Kids will dive into design, building and programming using LEGO WeDo, LEGO Mindstorms and art supplies. They’ll learn about design concepts (resources, requirements, testing, iteration, best practices) and computer science concepts (algorithms, commands, loops, sequence, iteration, if-else logic, etc.).

Please note: our classes are not competitions. There will be no rankings or prizes and all teams will have the chance to present their work.

Classes will take place on Sundays from 13:00 – 15:00 on the following dates:
– September 13, 20 and 27, 2020
– October 4, 2020

The programming will be taught in a combination of English and Dutch by a native Dutch, professional teacher with specialised training in computer science. The curriculum and workshops are based on NewTechKids’ pedagogy which focuses on concept-context learning and the use of tangible learning tools.

Our camp is ideal for children with no previous exposure to design and computer science and those who have previously participated in NewTechKids programs.

A maximum of 12 students is required to offer this camp. Registrants will be notified one week prior if the program is cancelled and a full refund will be provided.
