Winter 2019 Technology Systems Program: 7-12 years (Thursdays)

During this computer science program of eleven (11) weekly workshops, kids ages 7-12 will learn how to become better systems thinkers in the context of technology systems. They’ll learn the main characteristics of all technology systems and how systems like computers, tablets, smartphones, gaming consoles, smart fridges and other common devices work based on logic and computer science principles.

The program will include a combination of ‘no tech’ games and activities and the design, building and programming of prototypes with LEGO WeDo and LEGO Mindstorms robotics tools.

To help them develop their teamwork and collaboration skills, they will work in small teams for most of the activities.

The program will be taught in a combination of English and Dutch by a professional teacher with specialised computer science education training.

A minimum of 15 students is required to offer this program. Registrants will be notified one week prior if the program is cancelled and a full refund will be provided.

When: Workshops will take place weekly on Thursdays from 16:15 – 17:45 on the following dates:
– January 10, 17, 24, 31
– February 7, 14, 28
– March 7, 14, 21, 28

Where: Junior Atelier, Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam / Amsterdam Public Library (5-minute walk from Centraal Station)

The program’s curriculum and lessons are based on NewTechKids’ pedagogy which focuses on concept-context learning and the use of tangible objects.

Our program is ideal for children with no previous exposure to computer science and those who have previously participated in NewTechKids programs.

Girls are especially welcome to join. Our programs are designed to engage both girls and boys and recognise the different ways in which they learn.
