Winter 2019 Art & Computer Science Program: 7-12 years (Thurs.)

(Program taught in a combination of English and Dutch)

During this bootcamp of nine weekly workshops on Thursday afternoons, kids ages seven to 12 will discover ‘arts automatica’: designing, building and programming robots and mini-computers to design and make art.

Technology is transforming the way art is produced. Kids will discover how to use robots to draw, paint, sculpt and design digital art installations while learning important computer science and programming concepts such as automation, commands, loops, sequence, iteration, if-else statements and event handling. We’ll also share inspiring examples from real artists during every workshop.

To help them develop their teamwork and collaboration skills, they will work in small teams for most of the activities. They’ll create using LEGO WeDo and LEGO Mindstorms robots as well as Microbits mini-computers.

The program will be taught in a combination of English and Dutch by a professional teacher with specialised art and computer science education training.

A minimum of 15 students is required to offer this program. Registrants will be notified one week prior if the program is cancelled and a full refund will be provided.

When: Workshops will take place weekly on Thursdays from 16:15 – 17:45 on the following dates:
– January 24, 31
– February 7, 14, 28
– March 7, 14, 21, 28

Where: Junior Atelier, Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam / Amsterdam Public Library (5-minute walk from Centraal Station)

The program’s curriculum and lessons are based on NewTechKids’ pedagogy which focuses on design and rapid prototyping, computer science and programming.

Our program is ideal for children with no previous exposure to computer science and those who have previously participated in NewTechKids programs.

Girls and kids who don’t have a background in design, programming and computer science are especially welcome to join. Our programs are designed to engage both girls and boys and recognise the different ways in which they learn.
