Winter 2019 Tech Innovators Computer Science Program: 7-12 years (Tues.)

(Program taught in a combination of English and Dutch)

During this bootcamp of nine weekly workshops on Tuesday afternoons, kids ages seven to 12 will be challenged to design, build and program technology prototypes which help solve serious challenges faced by people in different parts of the world.

How can technology tackle improve air quality, reduce traffic, clean up plastic waste, increase food production, help care for elderly people and tackle the shortage of workers?

This course will help children develop an ‘innovator’s mindset’ while teaching them about important computer science concepts such as automation, commands, loops, sequence, iteration, if-else statements and event handling. We’ll also share inspiring examples of technology from around the world which is making the world more sustainable and improving quality of life for people.

To help them develop their teamwork and collaboration skills, they will work in small teams for most of the activities. They’ll create using LEGO Mindstorms robots as well as Microbits mini-computers.

The program will be taught in a combination of English and Dutch by a professional teacher with specialised art and computer science education training.

A minimum of 15 students is required to offer this program. Registrants will be notified one week prior if the program is cancelled and a full refund will be provided.

When: Workshops will take place weekly on Tuesdays from 16:15 – 17:45 on the following dates:
– January 22, 29
– February 5, 12 and 26
– March 5, 12, 19, 26

Where: Computer Lab, het Claverhuis, Elandsgracht 70, Amsterdam (de Jordaan)

The program’s curriculum and lessons are based on NewTechKids’ pedagogy which focuses on design and rapid prototyping, computer science and programming.

Our program is ideal for children with no previous exposure to computer science and those who have previously participated in NewTechKids programs.

Girls and kids who don’t have a background in design, programming and computer science are especially welcome to join. Our programs are designed to engage both girls and boys and recognise the different ways in which they learn.
