Saturdays – Intro to AI & Machine Learning for 13 – 18 Years: Nov-Dec. 2019

This course will be taught in a combination of English and Dutch by a professional teacher.

What do R2D2, Wall-E, Transformers and Halo have in common with self-driving cars and Netflix recommendations? They’re all examples of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

NewTechKids invites students ages 13-18 to join our AI course at the Amsterdam Public Library. During the course of seven (7) weekly workshops, students will learn what AI is, how it works, how it’s being used in different industries, and the pros, cons and ethics of this technology.

Students will explore AI through computer science concepts such as machine learning, algorithms, programming, automation and robots. What is machine intelligence? Can we control it? Should we be afraid of it or can it be used for good?

The course will begin by explaining the underlining principles through unplugged (no tech) activities before transitioning to a series of programming and robotics challenges.

We’ll use a series of weekly themes and encourage students to develop their own ideas and them into tech prototypes using LEGO Mindstorms robotics kits and Micro:bit micro-computers.

This course will take place on Saturday afternoons from 15:00 – 17:00 on the following dates:
– November 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
– December 7, 14

The November 2nd class will take place in the Maakplaats 021 space at OBA CC Amstel, Cullinanplein 1 (Amsterdam East) while the rest of classes will take place in Room 4.1 in OBA Centraal near Centraal Station.

Designed as an introductory course, it is ideal for both students who previous programming experience and students with none. It is part of a series designed to provide advanced technology education to high school students and prepare them for computer science and programming education in higher education.

A minimum of 15 students is required to offer this course. Registrants will be notified one week prior if the course is cancelled and a full refund will be provided.
