Fall 2018 Computer Science Program: 7-12 Years (Tuesdays)

During this computer science bootcamp of ten (10) weekly workshops, kids ages 7-12 will learn about computer science in the context of systems thinking and technology systems.

Kids will explore different kinds of technology systems and develop systems thinking skills by exploring computer science concepts such as automation, robots, programming, input, output, parts working together, feedback and design.

During each class, they’ll develop technology prototypes related to imagining a variety of useful systems which help humans and automate processes.

Please note: this program will rotate between ‘no tech’ classes (only using art and craft materials, no technology) and classes during which kids prototype with technology tools such as Ozobots and LEGO Mindstorms. Our rationale is to introduce CS concepts without the distraction of technology, with a focus on design and creativity, before challenging kids to apply them with technology tools.

According to NewTechKids’ pedagological framework, kids learn best using tangible objects and exploring the same computer science concepts in different learning contexts.

To help them develop their teamwork and collaboration skills, they will work in small teams for most of the activities.

When: Workshops will take place weekly on Tuesdays from 16:15 – 17:45 on the following dates:
– October 9, 16 en 30 (not on October 23 due to Herfstvakantie)
– November 6, 13, 20 en 27
– December 4, 11 en 18

Where: computer lab, het Claverhuis, Elandsgracht 70, Amsterdam (de Jordaan)

Our program will be taught in a combination of English and Dutch by professional teachers with specialised computer science education training. The curriculum and lessons are based on NewTechKids’ pedagogy which focuses on concept-context learning and the use of tangible objects.

Our program is ideal for children with no previous exposure to computer science and those who have previously participated in NewTechKids programs.

A minimum of 15 students is required to offer this program. Registrants will be notified one week prior if the program is cancelled and a full refund will be provided.
