Fall 2018 Computer Science Enrichment Program: 7-12 Years (Wednesdays)

NewTechKids is organising this enrichment program to introduce kids ages 7-12 to computer science and help them acquire important 21st century knowledge and skills. The program is designed to help kids develop higher-order problem-solving and critical thinking skills to strengthen their overall academic performance in school, with particular emphasis on math, logic, creativity and presentation skills.

During this program of twelve, weekly lessons, kids ages 7 to 12 will gain a deeper understanding of how technology works by exploring the computer science concepts that define all technology.

Participating kids will begin by discussing inspiring technology case studies and evaluating their pros, cons and implications before being introduced to important computer science concepts found in all technology. They’ll then work in pairs and teams to complete a series of class challenges based on creating both ‘no tech’ prototypes (from art and craft materials) and prototypes based on technology tools such as Ozobots and LEGO Mindstorms. Each lesson will end with team presentations during which kids practise presenting their work and giving and receiving constructive feedback. Every week, kids will receive a short homework assignment to reinforce what they learned during the lesson.

Computer science concepts covered will include automation, programming, algorithms, loops, input/output, parts working together, feedback, sequences, variables, and design cycles.

Students will receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of the program.

When: Workshops will take place weekly on Wednesdays from 14:45-17:15 on the following dates:
– September 19 and 26
– October 3, 10, 17 and 31 (not October 24 which is during the Herftsvakantie)
– November 7, 14, 21 and 28
– December 12 and 19

Where: Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam (Amsterdam Public Library) headquarters, Osterdokskade 143, Room 5.1. (5 minute walk from Amsterdam Centraal Station)

Our program will be taught in a combination of English and Dutch by professional teachers with specialised computer science education training. The curriculum and lessons are based on NewTechKids’ pedagogy which focuses on concept-context learning and the use of tangible objects.

Our program is ideal for children with no previous exposure to computer science and those who have previously participated in NewTechKids programs.

A minimum of 15 students is required to offer this program. Registrants will be notified one week prior if the program is cancelled and a full refund will be provided.

Light snacks and drinks will be provided and children can also bring healthy food from home.

This program is organised in partnership with Maakplaats 021, the Amsterdam Public Library’s network of Maker spaces in its branches.
