‘Understand Computers’ Bootcamp: 7-12 years

NewTechKids wants to prepare kids to invent the next Nintendo, not just use it. In order to become innovators who fix problems and develop better solutions, kids need to understand how computers work and how programming fits into the equation.

During this NewTechKids bootcamp of four weekly workshops, kids aged 7-12 will learn what goes on under computer hardware, what parts make up a computer and how these parts work together to solve problems and execute programs. Kids will tear apart a computer, build one using a Kano DIY computer kit, program LEGO Mindstorms robots and design using pen and paper.

Programming and technology concepts covered include systems thinking, algorithms, requirements, programming, automation, variables, commands, input-output, feedback systems, design and testing.

Tuesday, March 3rd from 16:00 – 17:30

Kids aged 7-12 are welcome to attend this bootcamp. We will teach theory and concepts to the whole group but then divide the class into two groups (7-9 year olds and 10-12 year olds) to complete the hands-on activities.

Children will work individually and in small teams to build Kano DIY computer kits and program LEGO Mindstorm robots provided by NewTechKids. The bootcamp will be taught primarily in English due to teacher availability. (The teacher speaks basic Dutch and many of the students will be bilingual.) A minimum number of students  is required to offer the bootcamp.
